The ACSM received over 2000 responses from countries including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and China.

Here’s the Top 10:

  2. Group Training
  3. High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT)
  4. Fitness Programmes for Older Adults
  5. Bodyweight Training
  6. Employing Certified Fitness Professionals
  7. Yoga
  8. Personal Training
  9. Functional Fitness Training
  10. Exercise is Medicine

In summary…

Wearable technology becomes the top predicted trend for 2019, moving up from #3 in 2018. Experts at the ACSM believe that this is down to new companies correcting some previous inaccuracies alongside devices, such as smart watches, becoming a fashion accessory as a result of more stylish appearances.

Making a significant return to the top 10 is Fitness Programmes for Older Adults as people are living and working longer, and maintaining healthier, active lifestyles later into their lives. It’s a segment of the market that fitness facilities will begin to increasingly capitalise on. Alongside this, at #6, Employing Certified Fitness Professionals jumps into the top 10 as prioritising hiring the right, qualified personnel becomes more important to both gym owners and members alike.

Group training retains its #2 ranking owing to increased innovation within the industry as well as research concerning its positive effects on mental wellbeing and reducing stress. HIIT training has dropped from #1 to #3 as a result of the perceived increased risk of injury, although experts believe it will remain popular in gyms across the world.

Just outside the top 10, trends making big moves for 2019 are Mobile Exercise Apps, Worksite Health Promotion and Workplace Wellbeing Programs and Outcome Measurements.
